Drama films that earn their emotional weight. We review everything from intimate character studies to grand historical epics, looking at performance, direction, and whether the film delivers on the human story it’s trying to tell.
Conclave is about faith, power, and what institutions do to the people who run them. Ralph Fiennes is quietly extraordinary. One of the best films of 2024.
Edward Berger's German-language adaptation of the Remarque novel is brutal, precise, and completely uninterested in the romance of war. One of the finest anti-war films ever made.
Todd Field's Tár is a film about power, accountability, and what happens when a genius uses talent as a license for cruelty. Cate Blanchett is beyond compare.
Saltburn is about obsession, class envy, and the violence hidden inside desire. Jacob Elordi and Barry Keoghan are both exceptional. It is not a comfortable film and it doesn't try to be.
Martin McDonagh made a film about the end of a friendship that ends up being about the end of everything. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are extraordinary.
A warm, funny, genuinely moving film about three very different people stuck together over the holidays.
A quiet, devastating film about the lives we almost lived and the people we could have become.
A towering biography of a man who changed history and spent his life grappling with what that meant.
A long, gentle, devastating film about goodness and what the world does to it.
An unflinching, necessary film that refuses to look away from the horror it documents.
